Dr. Parminder Sethi provides update on Rezūm therapy treatments at Pacific Urology
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – (April 11, 2018) Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlargement of the prostate, is one of the most common diseases that affects American men. It has been estimated that 70 percent of all men have enlarged prostate by the age of 60. By the age of 80, 90 percent of men are affected.
Symptoms of BPH can be divided into two categories, obstructive and irritative voiding symptoms. Obstructive urinary symptoms consist of difficulty to initiate the urinary stream, intermittent and slow stream, and post void dribbling. Irritative voiding symptoms include the sensation of not being able to empty, urinary frequency, urgency, urgent incontinence, burning upon urination and urge to get up at night to urinate.
When the symptoms are mild, watchful waiting is often recommended. When the symptoms become moderate or severe, they can be treated with medication, minimally invasive office procedures or surgeries.
A new and unique procedure demonstrating impressive results is Rezūm therapy. It basically uses steam, technically known as convective radiofrequency water vapor thermal therapy, to treat the enlarged prostate. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed in a few minutes in the office setting using local anesthesia. Clinicians use a hand-held device that provides radiofrequency generated thermal energy in the form of water vapor to the prostate. The energy transported by the water causes thermal damage to the enlarged targeted prostate tissue, which in turn causes the prostate cells to die. Over time, the body absorbs the treated tissue as part of the natural healing process, shrinking the prostate tissue and as it does, symptoms of BPH are relieved.
Patients are able to drive themselves home after the procedure and can expect to return to their routine activities within a few days. Patients may experience symptom relief in as little as two weeks and maximum benefit occurs in 1-3 months. It is an excellent option for patients who have failed other BPH therapies and are looking for an alternative to drug therapy or more invasive surgery.
Pacific Urology is proud to be one of six Centers of Excellence in the world to offer the Rezūm therapy for patients with an enlarged prostate. To date, we have performed close to 500 procedures with great results and no major complications.
